Education for Sustainability Portal

image1This Education for Sustainability (EfS) Portal has been developed by the Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability (ARIES) team to provide a central source of information on this new and emerging field.

The site contains:

  • a comprehensive explanation of Education for Sustainability (EfS) covering its history, why it is different from Environmental Education, its components and an extensive glossary;
  • sector specific EfS information which includes links to websites and key documents in EfS that are downloadable for your convenience; and
  • a section on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development covering what it is and what initiatives are coming out of it.

The site is designed for use by those who want to use education and learning based strategies to stimulate change towards sustainability. This includes those involved in community groups, local councils, government agencies, industry, non-government organisations, schools, colleges and universities.

Note: This portal has undergone a trial period by a group of environmental eduation professionals and other interested users. We are currently working to incorporate their feedback into an improved version of the portal. As we work our way through this process we have also opened up access to the portal so that others can benefit from this unique website.

Vision of a Sustainable World

'Our vision is a world in which there are many opportunities to learn about sustainable development. A world where a skilled population makes informed decisions in their home, community and working lives and in their leisure activities. A world where people understand and take responsibility for the impact they have on the quality of life of other people, locally and globally.'
