EfS InitiativesThe 1992 Rio UN Conference on Environment and Development, UNCED, Agenda 21, chapter 36 called for national strategies for education for sustainable development. The importance of this initiative was confirmed by the Commission on Sustainable Development Work Programme on Education, Public Awareness, and Training for Sustainability in 1998, which calls on governments at all levels to review national education policies and reorient formal educational systems, and to incorporate education into national strategies and action plans for sustainable development. Countries have undertaken initiatives to develop strategic frameworks, strategies and action plans and are increasingly looking to how to respond to the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. As well there are many initiatives being undertaken in school, vocational and higher education and in communities, and businesses around the world. Many NGOs are active in working with communities, formal education, business and in influencing policy. In this section we report on some initiatives in EfS, with a section on Australia. |
